Define project goals and audience (residents, visitors, businesses), create a sitemap, identify required integrations (Google Calendar, bill pay links, email routing), collect branding assets (logo, colors, photos), and gather page content (or determine content creation scope).
Setup: Install WordPress; set up a staging environment; install core security and performance plugins; perform basic WordPress configuration (permalinks, timezone, admin settings).
Layout: Select and configure the theme; configure mobile-responsive design; create site-wide header and footer; create a navigation menu structure; configure typography and brand colors; and address accessibility considerations (ADA best practices for municipal sites).
Home page: custom homepage layout, welcome message section, quick links (Pay Bill, Contact, Events, Visit Massena), embedded Google Event Calendar, news or announcements section, emergency alert banner, and social media integration.
Event Calendar page: create or connect to the city’s Google Calendar, embed the calendar on the Events Calendar page, style it to match the website design, and test mobile responsiveness.
Contact Us page: Contact form setup, email routing to city email address, spam protection configuration, confirmation message setup, Google Map embed.
About Us page: City overview, City history, City council/leadership section, downloadable documents (permits, documentation, minutes, etc.).
Visit the Massena page: Directory-style page including Parks, Camping, Places to Stay, Restaurants, Attractions, and Local businesses. Will organize listings by category, add links to external websites, images, and links to click for directions.
Content Formatting & SEO Setup: On-page SEO setup (titles, meta descriptions), URL structure optimization, Image optimization, Alt text for accessibility, Google Analytics, and Search Console setup.
Security & Performance: Install a security plugin, configure firewall settings, configure automated backups, basic speed optimization, caching setup, and spam filtering setup.
Testing & Launch: Final content approval, migration from staging to live, submit to search engines, mobile-friendly verification, and forms/links/page testing.
Training & Handoff: Admin login setup for city staff for up to 2 hours, which includes updating the calendar, editing pages, adding events, and managing contact form submissions.
